Diabetes Patients are Winners at the Valley Classic

This year’s Valley Classic took place at NCR Country Club on August 9. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our sponsors, players, donors and volunteers – featuring two Platinum Level sponsors in CDW and Skanska/Shook - the tournament raised some $130,000 forthe Diabetes Inpatient Education Team based at the Bull Family Diabetes Center.

For the third consecutive year the tournament was chaired by Arik Sherk who led a 17-member committee comprised of community volunteers. In keeping with the tournament’s beneficiary program, diabetes educational materials were available at the event courtesy of the Bull Family Diabetes Center, Imaging Resource Centers and Premier Community Health.

That evening, Mr. Sherk served as master of ceremonies for the dinner and awards presentation for golfers and their guests at the NCR clubhouse. Dinner speakers included: MVH President and CEO Mary Boosalis who thanked sponsors and donors for their continuing commitment to MVH patients; Miguel Parilo, MD, FACP, medical director of the Bull Family Diabetes Center, who spoke about the importance of funding for patient education; and Foundation Board Chair Jack Lobeck who participated in the awarding of the skill prizes and trophies to the winning teams.

Two ‘guest drivers’ were recognized for their efforts, providing an extra tee shot per foursome for an additional donation. Lending their skills were University of Dayton Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Jon Borovich and U.D. Hall of Famer Ed Young. Mr. Young is a member of the Valley Classic steering committee.

In addition to prizes awarded for longest drive, closest-to-the-pin and closest second shot, the winning teams included: First Place Net score team: Jim Porter, Dennis Quebe, Gregory Ross and Roger VanDerHorst. The First Place Gross score team: James Campbell, Nick Giallombardo, Paul Grubich and Evan Maronangeli.

Since 1990, more than $3.1 million in proceeds have been raised to benefit patient programs and services. The MVH Foundation extends grateful appreciation to all of the businesses and individuals who made the 2010 tournament a huge success for diabetes patients.
